This scene is called a sombre scene, a sombre scene is where it seems sad, it's a scene without humour and is normally very serious. The way you can tell if a scene would be considered as sombre would be the mise-en-scène and the music, but if for example it's just the image, like above, then you would have to just rely on the mise-en-scène. For example in this image, it is an over the shoulder shot, the female looks sad, she looking over her shoulder almost in regret the woman just out of focus in the back, is also looking the same way. There's nothing bright or hapy about this image, the background is dull and grey, there's nothing to this scene but saddess.
